Apple's bringing 3G to the iPhone-table, there's no doubt about that. But, just how did Apple manage to solve the battery-drain issues that they claimed kept the current-generation iPhone from sporting a 3G radio? By allowing the user to disable 3G data access for those times when super-speedy data speeds (or more battery uptime) are needed, of course.

Google announced that it has released a new version of the Google Reader for iPhone. Still in beta, it promises to deliver much better, more desktop-like experience to the Apple handset owners.
This new version is designed to offer many of the same features as the desktop, while making it quick and easy to act on items. If you've used list view, then it should be familiar to you. Scan the titles for an item that interests you, tap and it expands in place. Starring,

The Apple iPhone is already sold out in the UK, following O2's iPhone price cut, and now the last reliable iPhone stock has run dry. Apple's own online store has stopped taking orders for iPhone 8Gb and iPhone 16GB handsets, indicating that Apple is gearing up to release their next-generation iPhone with 3G data connectivity.
Previously, the Apple online store showed delays of 5 to 7 days for all iPhone orders, but Apple has changed the status to "Currently Unavailable." The global shortfall of iPhone stock, paired with Apple's own shortage, indicates that the 3G iPhone is indeed due to launch soon.

If you don't own a Mac, but always wanted to be able to manage your iPhone Notes from a PC, you obviously couldn't do it. Both MegaPhone (former iPhoneDrive) and iPhoneNotes are Mac only apps. That has just changed…
Thanks to the new native app called RemoteNote - all users, no matter which OS they're running on their desktop computer, can view and edit notes on their iPhone. The application relies on the WiFi hotspot and allows you to remotely connect to your iPhone and change notes from a web browser. All web browsers are supported — including Safari, IE, Firefox and Opera — but it is required, though, that you have Adobe Flash Player installed. In addition, your iPhone needs to be jailbroken as well as Jiggy Runtime installed. Both RemoteNote and Jiggy Runtime are available from Installer.app.

Mashups are great, they combine the best of multiple applications and make for a more versatile and convenient user experience. The latest map-mashup to hit the iPhone brings together the convenience on local search, Google Maps, and City Guides. Enter Schmap.
Directing your iPhone Safari browser to www.schmap.com takes you to your Schmap homepage, where you can choose to browse through "City Guides" broken down by categories (restaurants, shopping, etc.) or search for local businesses in your area. Great, there are a lot of map-services on the web that do the same thing. Right?

A company called Lextex is working on an application that lets controlling surveillance devices via iPhone. The so called CodeName iVy project provides users with complete remote access to what is happening, including easy time-shifting — all from any computer or iPhone using the web browser. Apparently, this is also working over EDGE, even though we're not eager to try it that way.
According to Lextex, traditional surveillance systems use a joystick or mouse to control camera positioning. With the iPhone, the user has the potential of a much more intuitive interface to drag the camera around and zoom in on things by pinching the picture. Sounds cool, but just wait to see how it looks in real life. Two video clips follow after the jump. Enjoy!

Singapore Telecommunications, aka SingTel, announced that it scored the iPhone distribution deal for four countries - Singapore, India, Australia, and Philippines. The Southeast Asia's largest phone company said Apple's handset will be offered through SingTel Mobile in Singapore, and it's partly-owned subsidiaries in Australia (Optus), India (Bharti Group), and the Philippines (Globe Telecom). No dates were given, though.
Now it's seems official - Apple's exclusive country deals are out. In Italy, TIM and Vodafone are carrying the iPhone, while Vodafone will be competing with SingTel's subsidiaries in Australia and India.

While BlackBerry users are busting out emails in real-time with the BlackBerry push email service, iPhone users are left to deal with a few third-party applications to enable push-email over their Outlook Exchange servers. Oh, and there's also Yahoo's iPhone push email support, but that service has been notoriously unreliable in dealing with real-time email delivery.
So, imagine our surprise on hearing that the next iPhone OS update - the iPhone OS 2.0 firmware - will launch packing native support for push email. A new "Settings" pane under a new

The folks behind Orb, the application/service that allows you to stream content from your PC to other devices, just announced the iPhone support. Now Apple handset's users are able to access all the content from their PC — including TV — to their shiny device. Naturally, iPod Touch is also supported but it is required, however, that both iPhone and/or iPod are jailbroken. And while we have nothing against that — on the contrary, we support iPhone being totally open — I'm curious to see how will Apple react to this. I guess Orb could argue this is just a temporary solution, until the new firmware with third-party apps becomes available. In the meantime, you can grab OrbLive from "Multimedia" menu in the Installer.app, or check out the short video demonstration of Orb in "iPhone action" after the jump.

Want to control your TiVo from your iPhone or iPod Touch? Now you can do that thanks to the new application called (no surprise here) TiVoRemote. The application is compiled by TiVo Community Forum's member "Duckfin" and is still in the "quick and dirty" phase, hence user interface could use some polishing. After all, it should work on your beautiful phone/media player.

Like any other media company NBC is worried about their content being stolen. And while we keep arguing DRM is not the answer, but a simple annoyance to the end users - they keep pushing their awkward "story." However, this time even with some restrictions they seem to be doing the right thing. The media company is offering full episodes of 30 Rock and The Office to all iPhone and iPod Touch users. Best of all there are no ads — it's 100% free — making us think what's behind the curtain. Free ad-supported content is cool in my book, but this is simply weird. In addition, there's no DRM involved even though restrictions are made — whenever you exit Safari, you'll need to download the episodes again. Forget EDGE, this is the WiFi thing only and even then you better have more than a decent connection or at least enough time to spare.

Ladies and gentlemen, he was a good buddy. Its large glossy screen made people around envy you (at least when you were in the hotspot area), and its media playing capabilities were second to none. However, he's not longer with British citizens…
iPhone, at least in its 2G version, is official dead in the UK. And even though we knew this is coming, O2 UK obviously wanted to make things clear, hence their iPhone page has a simple "iPhone no longer available" sentence. This in return prompts a question when will the 3G iPhone be released, and who will get the honor to carry it. Hopefully, we'll know sooner rather than later. June seems like a month to look forward to…

Our Tuesday wouldn't be complete without any 3G iPhone rumors/pics to show our readers. As June closes in on us, new 3G iPhone pictures have emerged from Chinese forum WeiPhone.com.
The iPhone, clad in white, in these pictures shows the redesigned speakers/dock connector, the extra sensor near the earpiece, the more tapered design, and the glossy plastic casing that was rumored to be in store for the next-generation iPhone - so this could be a legitimate preview of the 3G iPhone. On the other hand, Apple is notorious for circulating fake handsets to throw people like us off their trail.

The Beta 5 version of the iPhone SDK is now out. Unlike the previous release, this one doesn't bring much new to the table. However, tweaks to the developers tools and some bug fixes should be more than enough for any iPhone/iPod Touch developer out there to update.
