Nokia Siemens demos I-HSPA at 10.1Mbps!
Posted on May 09 2008 7:59 AM by Aziz

Sure, LTE is still several years away, but if this latest test is any indication of HSPA-based mobile broadband solutions set to hit the wireless market in the near term, the long road to LTE won't be too unbearable. Nokia Siemens networks has demonstrated their new I-HSPA (Internet High Speed Packet Access) in Austria and showed off the technology's 10.1Mbps data transfer rate.

The outstanding data speeds were achieved by using a "flat-network architecture" where the HSPA network base stations are directly connected to the internet. By connecting the base station directly to the web, users experience less latency. And, the flat network architecture allows for a smooth transition to LTE when it goes live.

Nokia E66 and E71 live and in the wild!
Posted on May 08 2008 7:14 AM by Aziz

Following up on those rather low-quality spy shots of the upcoming Nokia business phones - the Nokia E66 and E71 - it looks like Espoo's let their newest cats out of their bags. The Nokia E66 and Nokia E71 are set to take Nokia's enterprise handset portfolio to new levels.

As expected, both business-oriented handsets rock 3.2 megapixel shooters and 128MB of memory.

Labyrinth ported to Maemo; Mind Mapping hits Nokia Internet Tablets

Those of you that craved to organize your thoughts with your Nokia Internet Tablet while on the go, here's a reason to rejoice. A software engineer from Ukraine Eugene Antimirov ported Labyrinth to the Maemo platform allowing us to mind-map wherever we are. Sure, you could rely on some of the web-based solutions like MindMeister, but a native application is better in this case. You may not have an Internet connection everywhere and even if you do, the CPU inside can't handle the complex JavaScript or Flash code of the web-based mind-mapping tools fast enough. At least I couldn't rely on the web-based tools because of the speed.

Nokia E71 to be announced tomorrow?
Posted on May 07 2008 8:07 AM by Aziz

A rumor on the street is that the Finnish giant will be announcing its long awaited E71 smartphone tomorrow. The upcoming device builds on top of its predecessors, the E61/E61i models, and has everything the mentioned two smartphones lacked. Aside from the full QWERTY-keyboard, there's a built-in GPS, better 3.2 megapixels camera, more available RAM, smaller form factor, and the new version of Symbian S60 (3.2). In short, this is one device to look forward to. As a matter of fact, I would call it the best Nokia smartphone — it combines all the multimedia features of the Symbian/S60 platform with business friendly look and feel in a small package.

Nokia 6210 Navigator gets an FCC approval

Nokia 6210

Nokia 6210 Navigator has been spotted passing the FCC hurdle. The new navigator has all the "things" its predecessor, the 6110 Navigator model, had but also ads some new cards on the table. A better camera (3.2 megapixels with dual-LED flash), WiFi and the new version of Symbian S60 OS (3.2) are now included in the mix. If Ewan McGregor ever decides to turn on his motorcycle again and cross some serious distance with it, we know which device he'll use this time, right?

Anyway, expect the new Navigator to hit Nokia's New York and Chicago based Flagship stores later in the year. No carrier partners have been announced so far.

Nokia rolling custom 6124 classic in Taiwan with i-mode support

Wait, Taiwan? i-mode? Yep, turns out that Far EasTone Telecommunications licenses NTT DoCoMo's well-known mobile internet brand for use in Taiwan, and they've partnered with Nokia to deliver the service on a customized version of the 6124 classic candybar -- the first Nokia ever to offer it. Of course, no i-mode handset is complete without blazing data speeds, and sure enough, the 6124 classic delivers with support for HSDPA in addition to a 2 megapixl cam, QVGA display, and S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1. Yep, that's right, not only is Nokia tying up with i-mode, they're doing so on an honest-to-goodness smartphone. Kudos!

Nokia switching up strategy to boost US market share
Posted on May 05 2008 6:17 AM by Aziz

Despite shockingly strong sales worldwide, Nokia has kept a fairly low profile in the US as of late -- not Sony Ericsson low, but still pretty stealth. Espoo wants to take a bigger bite out of the American pie, though, and as BusinessWeek notes, it pretty much has to play nice with the US megacarriers in order to do that. Historically, that has run counter to Nokia's corporate culture of rampant innovation with a general disregard for carriers' specific needs -- think Ovi, for example -- and that's where the winds of change start to blow.

8GB Nokia N95 lands on Rogers sticks tongue out at AT&T
Posted on May 05 2008 6:13 AM by Aziz

Get this: the first North American carrier to offer up Nokia's 8GB N95 isn't AT&T. Heck, it's not even a US-based operator. No friends, it's Canada's own Rogers Wireless. Just as we had heard late last month, the N95 8GB has officially landed in the Great North, and starting on May 6th, consumers up that way will be able to secure one for a hefty $399.99 with a three-year activation on the Rogers Vision Unlimited On-Device Mobile Browsing Plan. Don't weep too heavily, AT&T users -- your time should be

Nokia promises "a lot" more phones in the US, we say "orly"?
Posted on May 05 2008 5:49 AM by Aziz

According to Nokia chief designer Alastair Curtis, Nokia will be offering several -- nay, a "lot" -- more products in the US very soon. "In the next few months," Curtis promised, "operators will carry a lot of new products from us." While Nokia controls 40% of the worldwide handset market, they only have a 10% share in the United States. It seems they're not happy with that and want a bigger piece of the American pie. Bring it on, Nokia. We're ready to see these phones from you, say, in the form of an E71 or Tube?

Three flavors of the Nokia N82

After running the series of photos comparing the N95 8GB with N96, and N78 with N82, it's the "pure N82" time only. Three Nokia N82 versions are on display - black, white and the silver one. It's much easier to pick the favorite color this way, even though I guess most of you folks prefer the black one. Am I right?

Domo arigato Tomoharu Yazawa, the Black Nokia N82 is amazing
Posted on Apr 30 2008 11:30 AM by Aziz

Back in November I had the pleasure of attending the Nokia N82 product launch with several other bloggers. We all got a chance to meet one of the Product Managers who worked on the Nokia N82, Tomoharu Yazawa [23 minute video interview]. He was, without a doubt, one of the coolest cats in the room, answering all of our questions without any hesitation all while sounding highly enthusiastic, professional and down to earth.
