With the more popular Palm Centro making more significant headway in Verizon's Palm OS-powered smartphone portfolio, the No. 2 US wireless carrier has announced that the recently launched Palm Treo 755p has met its end-of-life. The Palm Treo 755p was only launched on Verizon a few months back, and it seems that Verizon is already done with the long-delayed Palm Treo 755p.

Just in time to boost telesales and cash in on the dearth of non-iPhone related news, Sprint has launched online sales of its hotly-anticipated Palm Treo 800w. With Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, GPS, WiFi (with a dedicated toggle switch), and EVDO Rev. A tucked under its 320×320 touchscreen display, the Palm Treo 800w is Palm's latest attempt to retake at least a portion of their once considerable smartphone market share.

With their market share dropping ever lower these days, Palm's taken a proactive approach to streamlining its operation. Rather than finalize and launch their MyPalm portal out of beta-land, Palm has apparently decided to close-up shop on their Palm information portal. On September 1, 2008, MyPalm will cease to exist. Here's Palm's explanation for killing of MyPalm:

Can't wait to get your hands on a Palm Treo 800w? Well, if delayed gratification isn't something you've developed a taste for, then give Sprint a call. The exclusive Palm Treo 800w carrier (at least for now) has started accepting pre-orders for the device through its Telesales system (877-639-8351). As expected, the Palm Treo 800w will be available from Sprint for a $349.99 with 2-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate, or $424.00 with a 1-year contract and $100 rebate.

Sprint's upcoming Palm Treo 800w is something of a big deal for Palm. The Palm Treo 800w represents Palm's latest effort to retake a portion of its once-huge smartphone market share, and a true test of Palm's ability to follow-up on the success of the Palm Centro. And, helping to spread the word about their Treo 800w prior to its launch, Palm hasn't exactly been keeping their Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional-powered smartphone under the tightest of wraps.

Sprint, Verizon, and Alltel subscribers with Palm Treo 700wx smartphones in hand, take heed. Following on Sprint's "minor update" released earlier this year, ROM cooks ("chefs," as we like to call them) have managed to get a fully-working Windows Mobile 6.0 installation running on a Palm Treo 700wx. The Windows Mobile 6.0 AKU 4.2 ROM is compatible with Palm Treo 700wx handsets on Verizon, Sprint, and Alltel's networks.

How much do you love blurry spy-shots of not-yet-final mobile phones? We do too. The latest peak of Palm's upcoming flagship Palm Treo 800w comes to us as in-hand and comparison shots. We can see that the Palm Treo 800w is a test-model with a non-final paint scheme.

Long-term contracts and carrier-locked handsets are almost a fact of life for many in the US. Sure, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T have all picked up a Palm Centro to complement their portfolio of smartphones, but the Big Three US wireless carriers are going to want you to sign up for a 2-year stint.

The ability to blog on-the-go is at once a blessing and a curse. Mobile blogging (or, moblogging, as it were) opens up so much in the way of productivity, but it also puts a kibosh on all "away from the computer" excuses. Double-edged swords like this are commonplace in the mobile space.

If you thought paying $299 for a 16GB iPhone 3G in White was more than just pocket change, imagine how AT&T feels, paying $325 for every iPhone 3G. At least that's what Oppenheimer equity research analyst Yair Reiner has told clients. Keeping in mind that carriers generally pay a maximum of $200 per handset, Reiner believes that AT&T sees the iPhone 3G as a potential blockbuster hit that will increase the No.

As I mentioned previously, the BlackBerry Javelin will feature the same 480×360 display, large QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera, BES 5.0 support quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM, GPS, BlackBerry OS 4.6, WiFi, and an ArgonV processor, as its speedier 3G-brother. Unfortunately, the BlackBerry Javelin will be limited to 2.5G EDGE data speeds.

Just when we reported that Alltel's Treo 755p is getting the ROM update, thanks to TreoCentral we've become aware of updates for other Palm's devices - the Treo 700wx, Sprint Centro, and the Verizon Treo 755p. Let's briefly go through each of the updates, shall we.

If BlackBerry and iPhone users can have it, so can Palm OS based smartphone owners. I'm talking about the Facebook application, the one that allows you to poke and chat with your buddies while pretending to work. Facebook is now fully optimized for Palm OS. The native application allows users to:

The Centro is small and light, comes with a touch screen for easy browsing and navigation, and fits comfortably in the hand. It has a full QWERTY keyboard too, although the buttons are tiny and cramped, forcing us to press buttons using our fingertips.
