The latest rumor regarding the oft-speculated Sidekick Gekko/Gecco/Aspen (depending on which particular rumor you're thinking about) comes to us wrapped in completely unsubstantiated packaging. Word on the street is that the Sidekick Gekko will be called the "Sidekick 2008" when it's released on T-Mobile's network. As expected, some leaked pictures show the Sidekick Gekko sporting a variety of swappable color-panels, reminiscent of the Sidekick iD.

When does a Windows Mobile 6.0-powered smartphone with a WVGA display sporting the highest pixel density of any VGA smartphone on market? When the list of cons far outweighs what little benefit you could hope to get from a gloriously crisp WVGA display, that's when. The Toshiba Protege G910 is apparently just such a smartphone. PocketNow scored a Toshiba Protege G910 of their very own and they put it through the ringer. The end result? A smartphone with more potential than punch.

There's a trend among Windows Mobile smartphone makers - everyone and their mama is making custom user interfaces that sit on top of the Microsoft's mobile OS. We've seen HTC and Gigabyte doing it, and Sony Ericsson will rollout its own UI with the Xperia launch.

According to Akihabara, Toshiba's iPhone-fightin' Portégé G810 will be released on June 20th. In terms of specs, the all-touchscreen device is pretty much identical to the HTC Diamond, but fails to deliver the VGA resolution on its 2.8-inch display — it uses QVGA (240×320 pixels), instead. There's also WiFi, GPS (and A-GPS support), Bluetooth, FM radio, HSDPA/HSUPA, and a microSD memory expansion slot. Windows Mobile 6.1 with some custom UI on top of it is running the show.

Announced last month and due to hit the streets in the next couple of weeks, the Toshiba Portégé G710 is a BlackBerryesque device running Windows Mobile 6 and featuring a built-in GPS receiver.
It doesn't just look a bit like a BlackBerry, the Portégé G710 is aiming at exactly the same market as devices such as the BlackBerry Curve 8310. The Portégé is different though in that it runs Windows Mobile, and it is possible to integrate the device with a Microsoft Exchange server for push email support.
The 2.46" 320 x 240 pixel display is pretty standard for this type of device, although the lack of a touchscreen may prove irritating when used with a satellite navigation package. On the back is a 2 megapixel camera, and the G710 supports microSD expandable memory, it also comes with Bluetooth 1.2 and USB 1.1 connectivity.

Toshiba's new Softbank 815T PB is the robot/cellphone hybrid I would've dreamed of if cellphones had been around when I was a kid. It's made for an upcoming Japanese TV drama called Ketai Sousakan 7 and it really does transform, Transformers-like, into a robot toy complete with tiny bunched fists. Even the display-face is part of the robot effect, and the phone comes with games with the same theme. It's in silver and black, has a QVGA screen, 3.2 megapixel camera and is a 3G phone, so it might venture outside Japanese shores. We don't know much else other than an April release date, but we'll keep you posted.

Toshiba already got official with its G710 and G910 handsets last month, but it's just now filled in that rather glaring numerical gap, with it taking the wraps off its new Portege G810 smartphone at MWC (not to be confused with Samsung's also-just-announced G810). Like those other two, this one's a Windows Mobile 6 device, and it boasts support for HSDPA and HSUPA, along with built-in GPS and A-GPS, and the always-welcome integrated WiFi and Bluetooth. Otherwise, you can expect a 2.8-inch QVGA touch screen, a 3 megapixel camera, a microSD card slot for expansion and even an FM radio in case all the usual PMP features aren't enough for you.
