The elderly of Japan may like that concept as well, as Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo is about to roll out the "Raku-Raku" handset that personifies that functional but useful line for customers that just want to make calls. For the elderly, that's usually the only goal with a cellphone. An extra monthly revenue stream for NTT DoCoMo is not bad either from a business perspective. What is killer about the Raku-Raku is the "Slow Voice" feature. It actually slows down spoken words coming into the handset itself for those that prefer a more laid-back conversation instead of a caffeine-fueled one. Other features include noise compensation that raises or lowers mic sensitivity and incoming audio based on ambient noise and voice reading of SMS and email messages.

Despite the fact that its fellow carriers play the fool in those sometimes-clever My Circle commercials, Alltel is in talks with at least three of its rivals to see if any are interested in picking up "the nation's largest wireless network," according to the Wall Street Journal. Alltel, with its 12 million subscribers and $22 billion market valuation, claims just one-fifth the amount of subs that either AT&T or Verizon do, but has made it niche serving customers in areas with poor coverage by the majors -- making it an attractive target for anyone looking to quickly expand their network. Samsung is again at the forefront of the mobile technology. Recently they unveiled an ultra-slim mobile handset, called u100, which is 5.9mm thin. Sometime ago we had covered Sony’s attack into the mobile phone market with 8 new mobile phones (read here). It looks like the South Korean electronics manufacturer was not quite happy with that and decided to respond adequately.

The Grunding U900 was presented at the 3GSM in Barcelona and will probably not break your bank account, which is one of the advantages of single-chip solutions, and still offer you quite a few features due to it’s Linux and RTOS (Realtime Operating System): it offers decent multimedia functions with an MicroSD expandable MP3 Player, a 2 Megapixel CMOS sensor camera which supports video calls and both UMTS and EDGE, meaning that it can be used fully in the US and Europe. Bluetooth and USB offer connectivity to your other devices and if you get bored of your MP3 collection, just tune into the radio with the built-in FM receiver.

It is fair enough to describe the Samsung K5 as a real innovation as it's definitely different to other MP3 players. It may not be the cheapest or the smallest, but it is certainly the most unusual. The speaker was a real find. You can listen to a good piece of music without an annoying plug in your ear. If you are listening with friends, the speaker is powerful enough to be heard above talking and laughter.

The midrange V3xx has been re-rendered in a lovely gold shade, decidedly more flashy than the original gunmetal gray variant. Features carry over, meaning we get the same 1.3 megapixel shooter, microSD expansion, fabulous HSDPA radio, and just-can't-get-enough RAZR styling for the price of $99.99 after contract and rebates have been applied. Look for it in stores now -- or, if you're like us, you'll keep those wallets firmly shut for the maxx.

We just got the chance to go mano a mano with the MOTORIZR Z8 here at 3GSM. Whether you call it a kick-slider or banana, one thing's for sure: it feels good pressed up to the face. Just check the pics to see how greasy close it's been to the legions of sweaty geek-cheeks here in Barcelona. Eww, man sweat -- but ohhh Symbian.

We do love The Onion around these parts, and when Onion coverage does cross over into Engadget territory, we find it's usually best to let those guys speak for themeselves:
We looked at [the iPhone's] innovative user interface, the paradigm-shifting voicemail, the best-in-class mobile browser, and we realized we could make all that seem ridiculously outdated by the time the product becomes available to customers in June,' said Jobs, who described the project as 'Apple reinventing the iPhone.
