Enthusiasts bring 3rd party apps to the Helio Ocean, too
Posted on Aug 06 2007 4:02 AM by FlashedBot
Filed Under:

The iPhone isn't the only handset whose software innards are getting lovingly torn apart in the name of science this week. It turns out some intrepid users of the Helio Ocean (a device occasionally compared to the iPhone, coincidentally) have been slaving away on a method for adding extra applications outside of the carrier's walled garden. Their first success is a doozy, too: Opera Mini 3, one of the most prized jewels in the world of mobile software. The developers aren't claiming it's bug-free -- landscape mode and the QWERTY keyboard don't work, for example -- but it's a huge step in the right direction and they're continuing to work out the kinks. More custom apps are said to be on the way, and don't worry, Drift and Heat users -- support's said to be on the way for you guys, too.

More Palm Gandolf (Treo 800?) pictures leak, prepare for disappointment

treo-800p-live-1l.jpg

Now the following pictures are not of high enough quality for us to judge the appearance of the next Treo iteration, but if they are anything like this … I think I’m going to cry, I am a closet Palm freak after all. Besides being ugly the source of these images says the keyboard is even smaller than that of the 650! Bad news for people with freakishly large hands like me. Specifications include a touch screen which goes against the information I received almost 2 months earlier...

LG lets loose WiBro-equipped LG-KC1 in Korea
Posted on Aug 06 2007 4:02 AM by FlashedBot
Filed Under:

We've known this gem was looming, but word on the street has the LG-KC1 finally hitting the hands of eager South Koreans. Amongst the niceties are a potent 806MHz Marvell Monahans CPU, 512MB of NAND Flash ROM, 128MB of SDRAM, WiBro connectivity, T-DMB mobile TV, integrated Bluetooth, a two-megapixel camera, and a 2.8-inch QVGA screen to boot. Unfortunately, it looks like this otherwise fantastically spec'd device is still running Windows Mobile 5 from yesteryear, and of course, the chances of it ever making it to US soil in the near future are essentially nil. Regardless, feel free to click on through for another picture if you enjoy the tease.

Pictures: OpenMoko unboxing, for developers by developers

Do I think Linux will swoop down and touch all mobile phones in the coming years? Not really, but I like that some people are trying something new. The OpenMoko stands for open hardware and open software. You want features? Just ask for it and they shall come, hopefully. Pictures replicated on my Flickr account in case the Digg effect happens.

Nokia N81 in the wild, sort of
Posted on Aug 06 2007 3:55 AM by FlashedBot
Filed Under: Nokia ,

Going all the way back to the N95, it seems like Nokia started having a really hard time keeping a lid on hot upcoming product releases -- not to say we're complaining or anything -- and the upcoming N81 slider with a penchant for music is no exception. Following some serious scoopage a few months back, we're now seeing this shot of a believable-looking N81 dummy, which we're guessing is in the process of getting shipped out to retailers preparing to sell the real thing. With a rumored 8GB of onboard storage, HSDPA, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, we imagine said retailers should be doing a pretty brisk business, too.

The Cord Continues to Fray
Posted on Aug 06 2007 3:55 AM by FlashedBot
Filed Under: News ,

I’ve been writing for a long time now about how more and more people are cutting the cord, by ditching landlines and going exclusively mobile. And it seems the trend is accelerating reports El Reg. This also casts a big dollop of shiny doubt over the wisdom of any kind of quad play strategy.

Consulting firm, Analysys, have written a new report on this called “The Acceleration of Fixed-Mobile Substitution in Western Europe: facts and figures”, which forecasts that among other nuggets, 50% of all European calls will be mobile by as soon as next year.

In advanced mobile markets, like Finland, already 74.6% of calls are made from mobile phones. More traditionalist Germany has 24.3% of calls made from mobiles, but the common theme is the growth of mobile at the expense of landlines.

More blurry pictures of the Palm Gandolf -- the Treo 800 series?
Posted on Aug 06 2007 3:55 AM by FlashedBot
Filed Under: Palm ,

Man, this thing just gets uglier every time we see it. This here is apparently the very latest, piping hot batch of blurry shots of the Palm Gandolf, the multifaceted new platform that Palm appears to be readying in both Garnet and Windows Mobile flavors with the carrier's choice of either GSM or CDMA under the hood. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be getting any prettier as it gets closer to an official debut -- quite the opposite, actually, and the keyboard is said to be a good deal smaller than its predecessors', eliminating one of Palm's few remaining talking points for the Treo line. The device is now rumored to be taking on the "800" moniker, a move which appears to call this out as being the Treo line's new king of the hill. Anyone else think this abomination of industrial design looks more like a "500" at best?...

3 UK adds Nokia N95, ShoZu
Posted on Aug 06 2007 3:55 AM by FlashedBot
Filed Under: Nokia ,

The Hutchison’s 3 network in UK just added Nokia N95 to its offering. Potential customers of the operator’s X-Series plans are now able to get the Nokia’s flagship “multimedia computer” from free to £299, depending on the price plan they pick. Plus, with all the X-Series plans come an array of applications and services like Skype, Mobilcast, Sling Player and Orb, which actually make you feel all the benefits of a 3G network.

Nokia N95 with ShoZu on Three

Speaking of applications, roughly at the same time, 3 decided to offer yet one more free addon to its subscribers. Yes, it’s ShoZu, the application which allows instant sharing of photos and video with friends by uploading them to any of the popular content sharing services or to a social network directly from your handset.

Happy Slapping Hits Panorama
Posted on Aug 06 2007 3:55 AM by FlashedBot
Filed Under: News ,

It was ages ago that we were one of the first sources to identify Happy Slapping - back in January 2005, in fact. Since then, it’s grown from a tasteless prank - filming on a camera phone an unsuspecting victim’s reaction to being slapped on the cheek - to filming incredibly violent, illegal and unprovoked attacks.

Far from being a fad that died out quickly, it’s now gone mainstream, with these attacks being filmed and uploaded on sites like Google’s YouTube.

The BBC’s veteran investigative reporting programme, Panorama, tackled the subject last night with their Children’s Fight Club episode, including showing very disturbing footage of some attacks, interviews with kids who film the fights and the victims themselves. Probably most upsetting for the victims is that it’s humiliating enough to be beaten up, but really horrid to know that your peers and perfect strangers alike can see the evidence for themselves again and again.

Most horrid of all though (Google generally takes down films when they get complaints) are sites like Live Leak (no link as I don’t want them to get the Google Juice), ...

Sharp's Sidekick "Shuriken" hooks up with FCC
Posted on Aug 06 2007 3:55 AM by FlashedBot
Filed Under: Sharp ,

We're still not sure whether this is the legit Sidekick 4 -- you know, the true successor to the Sidekick 3, as opposed to some tangential compromise like the Sidekick iD -- but we're definitely encouraged by Sharp's internal designation for this sucker. It's been assigned the model number "PV250" to be exact, which would put it above the Sidekick 3's PV200 (and well above the iD's PV150), suggesting that the Shuriken is likely the next-gen Sidekick we should all be getting excited about, not the Slide from Motorola. Then again, it seems like there isn't much new here; it should get a healthy 3-inch widescreen display, which is nice and all, but 3G data is still nowhere to be found. Guess you need a functioning 3G network to offer 3G devices, eh, T-Mobile?

Sidekick Shuriken - FCC filling

Sharp-made Sidekick PV-250, also known as Sidekick Shuriken has been approved by the FCC and is ready to hit the U.S. market. According to the specs we’ve got earlier, you can expect the “classic” Sidekick mechanism for accessing the full QWERTY keyboard, huge 3″ screen, 1.3 MP camera and a microSD expansion slot. As for the release date, all we know is that Shuriken will hit the market somewhere in Q4 2008.
