LiMo seem to be doing well pulling in major manufacturers to use their open-source Linux mobile OS; after Panasonic’s P905i yesterday, today we have the NEC N705iμ. It might not be as mobile TV focused as the Panasonic, but the N705iμ is far more pocket-friendly: just 9.8mm thick yet still boasting a 3-inch 240 x 427 WQVGA display.

In much of Europe, 3G data is traditionally as expensive as it is plentiful -- a safe haven of wireless email for businessfolk with a corporate card, yes, but that's about it. T-Mobile UK, for example, charges £29 (about $57) for its cheapest unlimited laptop data plan, likely keeping it out of reach of a good fraction of the otherwise interested masses. 3 may be changing the game next month, though, on rumors that it'll roll....

NEC's N500 has a standard design for this class handsets, measuring 48 x 86 x 14 mm and 80 grams. Despite the weight it has a good feel in the hand, and the good shaped plastic body and styled highlights give it an attractive and nice look. The black and white display is ideal for text, messages and simple pictures like logos and picture massages. The display resolution 176 x 220 pixel ideal for small and smart phone. The left side of the unit holds a spacious volume rocker, while on the other side we find a dedicated camera button. There is nice LEDs which notify users of new messages, active network and missed calls. This is not common for all NEC handsets and is not necessary to pick up and activate the device to see whether any alerts are waiting. The N500 is not comfortable for hold in ones hand because it is too wide.Sporting a simple and user friendly menu in style with other recent NEC handsets. The plastic keypad has good placed keys, giving it a cheap feel while oddly designed buttons, with the comfortable center keys, make the phone easer to dial .....

The NEC N344i mobile phone is a slightly better than an entry level candy bar phone. It works with GSM 900/ 1800/ 1900 networks. The phone weighs approximately 95 grams and measures about 109 x 47 x 11.9 mm. The screen of the NEC N344i mobile phone is a good 65k color TFT display with the resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. The phone is capable of supporting 40 channel polyphonic ringtones, but there is no room for mp3 tunes. There is no memory card slot and it has only 5 mb of shared memory. The phone has a VGA resolution camera which can also record short video clips. The purpose of videos and photos is beaten as there is no room to store them. A simple memory card slot would have made this phone a much better pick. There are other ....

Philips 859 is clamshell GSM phone. It sports 65k color display, built-in VGA camera, TV Link, GPRS data, WAP browser, E-mail Client, J2ME, Infrared, speakerphone, voice recording and voice dialing. While the RAZRs claim to fame is its slimness, the NEC e949 is thinner then the RAZR (just 11.9 mm thick - its dimensions are 90.8 x 47.9 x 11.9 mm ; remember the RAZRs exact thickness was 13.9 mm in comparison). They have put in a megapixel camera (1.3 megapixels - remember technology was not so advanced at the time of the RAZR's debut that they could put in anything more than a simple VGA camera).

Overall, the NEC e6161V mobile phone is good, as I only paid £45 for mine from Argos. It has Bluetooth, infrared, 2 cameras, memory card slot and video. It's not missing many features. I would recommend this to anyone, but beware the battery lasts no longer than 24 hours, and it can be quite complicated to do the littlest of things.

NEC has announced an update to its L1 (or N412i, depending on which country you live in) known as the N500iS.
While specifications on this new i-Mode handset are scarce at the moment, it seems as though this may only be a basic visual update to the L1, rather than an update of features, though the N500iS will support EDGE wireless data. At least NEC has made an already highly attractive handset even prettier, and knowing the features of the L1, there are a lot worse platforms to start with for a slim phone.
It is expected that more details on the NEC N500iS will be made available during 3GSM later this month.
